After we got married, we didn’t get the opportunity to go on a long trip/honeymoon. Because both my partner and I work in essential services, we thought it very important to keep working and helping out during the pandemic.
We did take time off later in the year however to be able to go on a proper long road trip, so stay tuned for that!
In the meantime, here is our little weekend adventure to Quebec City…
The day before our wedding, as there was no reception planned, again due to the pandemic, I decided to call a few hotels in Quebec City to see if any could accommodate us. Thus was the beginning of several last-minute hotel reservations for future trips (oops!).
The drive to get there was rainy but we were blessed with a bright rainbow on the way. It seemed to be predicting, for our trip at least, that “everything will be alright”. After a few gas pit stops with our rented white Audi in lieu of a white limo, we got to the Marriott Downtown hotel at 8 PM by the Saint-Jean Gate to Old Quebec.
I’ll be quite honest, there were fees for several things at this hotel, fees for parking, fees for internet, etc. but the location is golden! Right by the rue Saint-Jean as you pass the gate, you’re transported to an old European-style street. Small shops, bistros, and breakfast places abound and we were excited to take a stroll there the next morning.
However, I’m getting ahead of myself!
That evening as we arrived, we were hoping to eat a proper meal. We were hungry, hadn’t had much of a lunch (or much to eat all day, to be honest), and were looking forward to resting.
So still in my wedding dress, we wandered the rue Saint-Jean in hopes of finding a meal at Sapristi, as per the recommendation of the hotel’s front desk staff. It was closed and so were the other restaurants we found on that street. It was quite like a ghost town (a repeated theme on several of our trips in the months to come). Normal Saturday evenings would have had the place bustling with activity!
We huddled back to our hotel room and looked through an app hoping to find something open. And we did: the Chic Shack. We got a vegetarian mushroom-filled and absolutely mouth-watering poutine that we shared in our hotel room. A cozy way to share our first meal together and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Too late to be doing any sightseeing, we got our much-needed rest in order to be refreshed and ready for what tomorrow would bring!
