Finding and making the ramen
I was craving an evening snack and decided today was the day to try the instant ramen I’d gotten from a store in Toronto’s J-Town. Imported from Japan, this product originating from the same country caught my eye with its packaging. And honestly, who can resist and say no to ramen? Clearly not me! So for a little less than 5$, this two-portion-ramen came back with me to Montreal.
The making of these noodles was pretty straightforward: mix your noodles with 2 cups of boiled water, leave them in for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, and finally mix in the powder packet and enjoy!
One family member that seemed eager to try this meal with me was Yuki and he visibly showed that his interest was peaked as he lounged on the dining room table.
Is the flavour good?
The noodles themselves were really good, not as good as freshly made noodles (and honestly, it would be a crime to compare!), but delicious enough and of a higher quality than what most would find in instant ramen. The firmness of the texture is what sealed the deal for me and I did not let them sit as this would make them soggy (beware)!
Instantly, once mixed, the smell of bamboo permeates the food. I truly wish I enjoyed the smell and taste of bamboo, but, try as I may, I cannot. And truth be told, that’s on me, as the packaging did portray bamboo and the ingredients list in the back clearly denotes “Chinese Bamboo Shoots Powder”. Oh well, lesson learned for next time! If I put aside what I consider to be a pungent smell, the food is very very very good. My partner tried the ramen: he quite enjoyed it and thought the scent and taste of bamboo were very subtle.
Now, to elevate these noodles to another level, something I, unfortunately, didn’t have time for, adding shallots (always a winner), an egg, some corn, a few shiitake mushrooms, and some sort of other protein source (ex. tofu, beef) would give you a proper hearty meal.
