We were going to say goodbye to Vancouver this afternoon and head on to Squamish to begin our week of hiking in the area. What better way than to spend our morning at Jericho Beach and eat one last lunch in the city?
The beach was quiet. Early on a Monday morning, that was unsurprising. It meant getting Jericho Beach for ourselves, and we weren’t going to complain. The sky was uncharacteristically blue, and the light-coloured sand was littered with rocks, increasing in frequency as we got closer to shore; definitely not a “walk-barefoot-by-the-water” kind of beach as I painfully discovered! We picnicked on the beach for breakfast, having picked something up from cafés nearby. The beach stretches a long way so we explored it for a good part of the morning before going to get our rental car that would be our mode of transport for the rest of our trip. One does not need to use a car when exploring the city of Vancouver: public transport is an excellent way to get around and quite frankly is much cheaper.
Lunch at Ramen Danbo
With our rental car in hand, we went to get our last meal in Vancouver. Lo and behold, it was Fukuoka-style ramen, and I would do it all over again. There are 2 locations in Vancouver, we went to the one on 4th Street. Did it pass the vegetarian/vegan test? Yes! They have an entire vegan section to their menu. The ramen can obviously be turned vegetarian with the addition of an egg. I truly wish, as I’m writing this, that we had a Ramen Danbo in Montreal.
Getting to Squamish
Squamish is about an hour away from Vancouver, so this leg of the trip would be a short one (and thankfully so!). We stopped by Save On Foods, to pack food (ex. for sandwich making for our hikes). When we got out of the grocery store, we saw that someone had keyed our car. Not a good start for our road trip, but we were determined not to let this get to us. In Squamish, we made ourselves comfortable at the Squamish Adventure Inn in a private room. We knew we’d be hiking the next day; we just didn’t know where. Following the recommendation of our friendly hostel host, we were going to climb Stawamus Chief’s first peak the next day, as well as visit the Shannon Falls.
