After having reviewed the HelloFresh service and having so much fun in the writing process, I had to tackle the next subscription service on my list: GoodFood! I’ll start by stating that this post is in no way sponsored. I have seen several reviews online of meal subscription services. Without fail, the subscription service recommended seems to be the one that sponsored the writer. Must be coincidental.
Ordering The GoodFood Box
I had received an advertisement coupon by mail for the service. 35$ off of my first box. Seemed tempting! I dilly-dallied for days, unsure whether or not I should take the plunge. The overall price would be less than the price of one takeout meal for my partner and me. Yet, I hesitated. Could I get a better deal? Turns out I could. I googled coupons and found one that was to give me a 90$ rebate on my first box. Thinking it too good to be true, I decided nonetheless to give it a try. It worked. My first box would end up costing: nothing!
I picked a delivery for Friday the following week. Now, it was time to wait.
First Impressions Of The GoodFood Ordering System
The online system seems very easy to use. Before placing the order, there is a clear disclaimer on how payments are processed, the heads up needed to cancel the subscription, as well as the fee for the coming box. Ah, transparency! Truly a breath of fresh air.
A click of a button allows you to skip a week with ease and the option is presented at the top of the page, in clear view.
How Does GoodFood Cater to Vegetarians and Vegans?
GoodFood has a vegetarian option. Unlike other subscription services, the price for vegetarian food is cheaper than that for omnivores (and with reason!). Fruits, vegetables and tofu shouldn’t have to cost as much as meat or fish.
There are 3 meals in the vegetarian option. However, upon browsing further down, I did spot 2 vegan meals placed in different categories (Clean15 and EasyPrep). There are also vegetarian options for already prepped meals, appetizers, soups and salads.
The Meals
Creamy Mushroom & Miso Spaghetti
My initial thought was that it tasted of margarine. Upon later inspection, my partner had accidentally put more margarine than was recommended as he was cooking this meal. I enjoyed this enough to give it another try but with the proper amount of margarine next time.
Potato, Turnip & Leek Gratin
After eating this, I thought to myself, there should have been onions in the recipe, maybe something to counterbalance the taste of the leek? The leek in the gratin should have been softened before being layered and going into the oven. My partner couldn’t stomach the texture of the meal. As I initially enjoyed the taste and texture, it sadly became quickly sickening. I might hazard a guess that I was very hungry when I had my first bites and less so as I continued.
I’ll admit though, making this was fun as I learned a new cooking technique: making a gratin!
Curried Cauliflower, Golden Raisons & Caramelized Onions
Nothing notable to say about this particular meal. It didn’t mark me in any way and I don’t think I will be making it again anytime soon.
GoodFood & The Environment
Sadly, several items were individually packaged in plastic (not very environmentally friendly), but this seems to be a necessary evil with this kind of service where items are portion-controlled. If these services continue to be popular, I’m pretty sure mushroom packaging is the way of the future.
Kitten Appreciating The GoodFood Meals
Someone seemed more curious than us all about the GoodFood meals and that was definitely our kitten. Yuki was admiring, smelling and definitely trying to taste what came in the box.
Final Thoughts About GoodFood
All in all, I got to learn new cooking techniques and being given the ingredients to cook with, as well as clear instructions, does facilitate one’s life. However, the taste of the vegetarian meals wasn’t worth me paying for other meals or subscribing further. I will keep an eye out however for changes in their vegetarian choices and if I find a set of meals interesting, I might possibly give the service another chance.
